Historical Note

These files contain the documents dealing with the Sunday Worship in the Absence of a Priest. The professor responsible for these documents was Sr. Kathleen Hughes, R.S.C.J., wih was a CTU faculty member in the Word and Worship Department. The research was sponsored by the Lilly Endowment, Inc., Grants #910691 and #930634.

Permission from both of the national offices of worship in the United States and Canada were received. All bishops in the United States and Canada were surveyed. They were assured that their responses were confidential. There was a 70% return on the survey. In some cases when the bishop did not return the survey, they composed a letter giving their reason and reflections on the topic.

The U.S. dioceses that participated in this project are: Anchorage, Albany, Alexandria-Shreveport, Amarillo, Chicago, Columbus, Denver, Dodge City, Erie, Evansville, Gaylord, Grand Rapids, Great Falls-Billings, Jackson, La Crosse, Little Rock, Marquette, New Ulm, Portland, Rapid City, Richmond, and Youngstown. The Canadian dioceses that participated are: Edmonton, Gaspe, Nelson, Regina, and St. John, NB.

A part of this project was to assemble a think tank to brainstorm on the topic and to compose a survey.
